There has always been a misconception that braces are meant for children and teens. While that is true, adults can also use braces as well. The reason why it was easier for children and teens is that their teeth are still developing and growing. It is easier to intercept any issues before it becomes a problem. That doesn’t mean adults are not able to get braces. If they feel like they want straighter teeth, adults are still able to get braces. There are four reasons to get braces. Braces can align the teeth to prevent gingivitis. Braces tend to align your teeth, which can help you chew and digest food easier. In the long run, braces can help you save money by trying to prevent you from dental and health complications. After your braces come off, you will be more confident in your smile and thus build confidence in yourself. There are four types of braces that adults can get: Metal braces, ceramic braces, self-ligating braces, lingual braces, and Invisalign (clear aligners).

Metal braces

Metal braces are braces that are the most common and seen every day. These braces have existed for almost about 100 years. The metal braces have elastic ties surrounding them that are lined up by metal wires. The elastic also helps keep the wires as straight as possible. This enables the teeth to be adjusted.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces function the same as metal braces. Unlike the more flashy metal braces, ceramic braces are more discrete and more camouflaged in with the teeth. Just like the teeth, they can be stained based on consumption. They can also be cleaned as well.

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces are similar to metal and ceramic braces in which they require wires to adjust the teeth. But what makes them different than metal and ceramic braces is that they use clips/doors to keep the wires arranged rather than the use of elastic ties.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are braces that are made to fit behind the teeth. Lingual braces are steadily becoming more popular because they have the same function as metal, ceramic, and self-ligating braces. What makes them different from the other types of braces is the fact that they are done in the back of the teeth. When it is done in the back of the teeth, it makes it inconspicuous to passersby. Sometimes this makes people more comfortable and less subconscious about themselves when getting braces. The only disadvantage to having lingual braces is that it is more expensive and can tend to stay on your teeth longer than other braces. The average cost of lingual braces tends to range from $6,000-$14,000.

Clear aligners and Invisalign

Clear aligners and Invisalign go hand in hand. Clear aligners function just the same as braces for your teeth. However, they are transparent and plastic. They are molded, formed, and then covered your teeth. Think of it as a plastic shell that can straighten your teeth like braces. Clear aligners might be the name that is known to people. The brand Invisalign might seem to come to mind. Invisalign is like the Colgate to toothpaste or Kleenex to tissues.

Conclusion

In conclusion, adults can get braces just as much as kids or teens can. Especially nowadays, with the improvement of braces and Invisalign, everyone can get it. There are many options to choose from. Make your smile even better, because we want you to be proud of your smile!
