SARS-CoV-2 also known as Covid, coronavirus, and COVID-19 is a big family of virus that surfaced in 2019. The virus first appeared in Wuhan, China. It was said to originate in bats. The virus was airborne and is heavily contagious. 
With people being able to travel during that time, some traveled back to the U.S. bringing the COVID-19 virus with them. And thus, at the beginning of 2020, many countries around the world including the U.S. went through a pandemic. COVID-19 has similar symptoms as the cold and flu. The most common symptoms include fever, cough, tiredness, and loss of taste or smell. Less of these common symptoms include sore throat, headache, aches and pains, diarrhea, and sometimes the rash on the skin. The more serious symptoms include shortness of breath, loss of speech, and even chest pains. People should be careful to get infected because COVID-19 can lead to death. Throughout 2020, it was reported that there were approximately 385,500 deaths in the United States alone. In 2021, it was reported that there were close to 458,000 deaths through COVID-19 in the U.S. This doesn’t even include the people who didn’t report to the hospital.
When COVID-19 appeared in 2020, every country struggled in the pandemic and even implemented lockdown and mask mandates. Mask mandate requires people to wear their masks at all times. Once you leave the house, you have to wear a mask. You also have to be 6 feet apart from other people, in order to reduce the spread. As the pandemic continued and gotten worse, many countries implemented travel ban and lockdowns. People were not allowed to come in or leave their country. They were required to stay at home at all times. Some countries require a permit to leave to go grocery shopping. During those dark times, the world’s viewpoint was split in half. Half the people support wearing masks, while the other half are against the mask mandate and would not wear their masks. The people who wear the masks are usually the one that believe in the science behind it, they also believe that the government was correct in implementing the mask mandate. The people that do not wear the masks believed that COVID-19 is fake and that all the research and study behind it is a hoax. The truth is that COVID-19 is real and people can take it seriously. COVID-19 can affect the immune system and even the mouth and teeth.
How does COVID-19 affect the teeth? Proper blood flow is necessary to regulate oral health. COVID-19 disrupts the blood flow throughout the body. With the disruption of the blood flow through the mouth, the teeth and gums might not receive their nutrients in order to maintain their health. With the lack of blood flow going to the teeth and the gum, people can develop mouth sores. These mouth sores can lead to mouth ulcers and canker sores. Gingivitis or gum inflammation can occur due to COVID-19.
